about

Rediscovered Places, the new album from Ben Marston and Hugh Barrett – a masterful work of jazz tinged improvisation that evokes a journey through a vast landscape.

In 2018 John Shand from The Sydney Morning Herald called Marston and Barrett’s first album Unfound Places a

“beautiful album of trumpet/piano improvisations” and John Hardaker from wordsaboutmusic said

“Shaped by Barrett’s acoustic and electric keys, and Marston’s trumpet and laptop manipulations/atmospheres the music is evocative of places and faces just out of reach – It is beautiful work."

Their new album is equally evocative. Remixing elements from ‘Unfound Places’, it marks the mastery of two musicians whose unique sounds have evolved into a truly original collaboration. Continuing the use of stripped-down electronics and ambient textures, the pair explore a wider dynamic range, conjuring images both haunting and strikingly beautiful.

“For this recording Hugh and I were interested in using the live remix process to create longer form improvisations, like a through-composed work,” says Ben. “The result tells a musical story. It takes you on a journey.” For listeners that appreciate a sense of space, time and textures this is a journey well worth taking.
